Out of Balance
We live in a society where we rush through our days, think incessantly about one thing or another and overload our bodies with chemicals from foods and products we use. The end result of “life in the fast lane” is that we are out of balance .¨ physically, mentally and emotionally. And we feel the effects of this in our relationships, our work and in our health. But, we can change that.
Let’s face it, it’s not really a requirement of life to start every day with coffee and a donut – it’s just training. Nor is it a rule that we have to rush through our day. That is also just training because not everyone in the world lives the way we do and they are healthier for it. In France, for example, employees take one and a half to two hours a day for lunch. They eat a sit down, three-course meal and have a glass of wine with it. They relax and eat a whole food meal. These are key components of why they are healthier than we are in the US. In America, we usually eat at our desk, take a quick 30-minute break or skip lunch completely. This is not peaceful or healthy.
Something has to change. If we stop and pay attention, we will see that the way we have been trained to live doesn’t match our true internal state of being. That’s because our natural, normal and balanced state is one of vitality, joy and peace. In our current state, however, we don’t experience much of any of that. Instead, we are sick and tired.
Science has shown that healthy, focused employees are more likely to add to the company’s bottom line. Employers need to take note of the studies and of the way other countries work. Employers and employees need to work together to make changes in the American workplace. When we take care of our health, everyone wins. It’s a matter of retraining.
It may be hard to grasp that we have been taught to live the way we live, but if you look at it closely you will see the truth for yourself. From the time we are born, we are molded and guided in the ways of the world. Society itself is as much a teacher of what to think, do and eat as are our parents and caretakers. We are taught how to live, what is expected of us, what is “good” and “bad”, what to eat, how much to eat, and, most of all, what to think. There is no judgement here of right or wrong in our teachings, but they are not in sync with who we are at our core. If they were, we wouldn’t be experiencing so much imbalance in every part of our lives. It is time to heal what ails us. It is time for miracles.
The “Cures”
Miracle cures aren’t really miracles; they are just ways of living that are aligned with who we are at our core .¨ our soul self. And when we live in a way that matches our soul we naturally gravitate toward foods and an overall lifestyle that is healthy and balanced. The following seven “cures” probably won’t be new to you, except for maybe one .¨ the last one. However, each of the items listed will actually help us heal our lives. We don’t have to be sick and tired.
- Get Enough Sleep – Stress is the number one cause of sleep deprivation and most of us are stressed, but we are stressed unnecessarily. We can reduce our stress by allowing life to happen without creating a big drama out of it. Life is full of challenges big and small, but we don’t have to react to all of it. We do have the power to choose to allow life to happen as it does .¨ to honor the course it takes and to be at peace with it. It takes practice, but it is worth it.
- Drink Enough Water – The effects of dehydration include negative effects on mood, inability to focus, lack of energy, bad breath, muscle cramps, dry skin, headaches and more. What do plants and flowers look like if they don’t get enough water? They are listless, dry and droopy. We are no different. Switch out half of your beverages each day for water this week. Next week, do the same. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your weight in ounces of water each day. Each person is a little different, so find your “normal”.
- Reduce Sugar Intake– Sugar is toxic to the human body. Out of the 600,000 items in the grocery store, 480,000 have unnecessary sugar added. What does that mean to us? It means higher rates of obesity, heart disease (caused by sugar, not fat), diabetes, arthritis and a whole host of other preventable illnesses. Investigate your foods to see how much sugar is in them. Don’t just buy off the shelf and eat it. You are the only one who can make sure you are healthy. The processed foods manufacturers are only interested in their bank accounts, not your health.
- Eat Whole, Organic Foods– I recently watched a program on the top 15 healthiest diets in the world. The one thing that was consistent in all of them was they were all whole foods .¨ not processed. They didn’t come in a box or a can, they didn’t come from the freezer and they weren’t riddled with chemicals. We must stop eating processed, chemical-laden foods. It’s that simple. Eat whole, organic foods. You will feel so much better.
- Move! – Movement is essential for every part of the body, inside and out. Movement positively affects our cardiovascular health, bone density, digestion, immune system, endocrine system, our joints, physical strength and mood. Movement also reduces stress and helps us sleep better. Movement comes in many forms. My favorite place to move is in the gym, but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Not to worry. You can walk, run, dance, swim, cycle or anything else that gets you off the sofa or away from the computer and gets you moving. Your body will thank you.
- Create Peace-Most of us are not aware of the amount of noise we are immersed in each day or the deleterious effects of it. The conscious mind may tune out background noise, but your body doesn’t. Science has shown that noise affects our sleep, creates stomach problems, reduces the power of our immune system and has even been linked to heart disease. Our society doesn’t sanction peace and quiet, but many cultures around the world do. Find a way to get some peace and quiet each day throughout the day. Take ten minutes 3 times a day to relieve your body of the stress of noise. Go to a park, a museum or put noise cancelling headphones on as you sit at your desk. You might be amazed at the healing that takes place.
- Stop listening to your thoughts– Deep in our hearts, we all know the above steps provide healing, vitality and joy for us, but our mind tells us a different story. Our unhealthy beliefs and thoughts about ourselves keep us from making healthy choices. So when we reach for that sticky bun or box of Oreos, it is the mind talking to us, not the heart or our soul self. The mind is training; the heart is truth. Stop listening to your thoughts; it is then that you will know all you need to know to allow healing to take place.
These aren’t miracle cures, but they do create miracles in our lives in the form of physical, mental and emotional healing. As healing occurs, balance returns and balance brings joy, peace and more love than we have ever imagined. Do something today that your heart chooses to do.
